2019 Worldwide Photo Walk

For the past several years, photographers around the world have gathered in their respective communities on the first Saturday in October to walk around, take pictures, enjoy one another’s company and even raise money for an African orphanage. They are part of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk. For the first time, I was able to join a dozen others in Rock Hill and participate. Candidly, my participation was far more focused on the local element, rater than the worldwide scope of the day, but the event gave us a good excuse to get out and shoot together. The weather cooperated […]

Visiting the Sunflower Fields

The Draper Wildlife Management Area in York County, South Carolina is managed by the state’s Department of Natural Resources as a small game hunting area. But in the summer, they plant large tracts of sunflowers and corn, knowing it will attract game later in the year. In the summer, however, it attracts photographers. They come to shoot flowers, and families, and brides, and pets. That’s why I often prefer visiting sunflower fields early in the day, before the crowds show up. I was planning my annual trip to Draper, reading the reports of others who had been watching it for […]

Expectations in Photography

A good friend, with a rather negative outlook on life, once said to me, “The problem that you optimists have is that you are often disappointed. You’re always expecting the best, and when it doesn’t pan out, you are let down. I, on the other hand, never expect the best, so I am often pleasantly surprised!” There is, I suppose, some truth is what he said; though he still didn’t convince me to move over to the dark side. I continue to expect the best and, truth be told, things usually do work out pretty well. There are exceptions, of […]

Week 17 – Urbanscape

This weeks assignment from the 52 week photo challenge was a bit of a change up. It’s landscape week, but instead of heading to the woods or the mountains, the challenge was to shoot a “landscape style” shot in the city. As it turns out, I have another project in mind that calls for a skyline and a waterway, so that meant that I could – possibly – kill two birds with the same shoot. We’ll see how the other project develops, but as for a cityscape I was fairly pleased. The subject is Jacksonville, Florida. I often travel to […]

Week 12: Transportation

This week’s assignment for the 52 week photo challenge was from the artistic category: Transportation – Our world is one defined by how we get around. Literal or interpretative, find inspiration in transportation. As it happened, I found myself over on the South Carolina Coast with some time in front of one our state’s most iconic sites: the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, which spans the Cooper River along the Charleston Peninsula. There is no shortage of imagery of this bridge. It has become the de facto logo for Charleston and it’s likeness is everywhere. Aside from graphic representations, photographers have shot […]
